Road to Red Deer

Moose Hockey

If there's one thing you can say about the Meadow Ridge Moose, it's that they don't lack enthusiasm. Sporting their smart-looking turquoise-black jerseys, a pack of Moose players was spotted last week making the rounds of local businesses with hopes of raising funds for their first trip to the Western Shield Championships in Red Deer next month.

The Moose is BC's only Double A squad. With a lineup of top talent that includes former BC Breaker pros Kristin Hazzard and Emily McGrath-Agg, the Moose was able to capture the title of the South Coast Female Amateur Hockey League with a record of 21 wins, 3 losses, 2 ties.

But it's how the Moose are raising money that has many impressed. In addition to the standard appeals to family and friends, the Moose have developed a creative sponsorship campaign called "MooseBoost" that gives local businesses a package of benefits in return for their financial support. It includes everything from business names on team jackets to tickets to a private concert headlined by country music recording artist Aaron Pritchett with a guest appearance by newcomer singer/songwriter Madeline Merlo. They're calling it MooseJam.

"I signed up to do this concert not only because I'm a huge hockey fan, but also because I believe in women's hockey. I am excited to return to my old stomping grounds (I was a DJ and bar band there for almost 10 years) and to help the Moose out for this private event.  said Pritchett, a two-time Juno nominee and multiple CCMA-winner. "Women's hockey doesn't get nearly the profile or exposure that men's hockey does, and this is one small way I can help contribute to raise awareness."

Merlo, a Maple Ridge native who just cut her first single, feels just as passionately about the cause. "We all saw how exciting the women's Olympic gold medal game was. To me, the Moose players are at the grassroots of that effort. I'm proud to be involved with this event."

Local business people like Ray Werger, a Realtor with Royal Lepage West Real Estate Services, have been impressed enough to put their wallets behind the team's drive. "I'm a dad, and I see how important it is to inspire the next generation of girls to go further with our national game," said Werger. "The Moose are out in our community mentoring girls. That kind of payback is important to our society."
